I'm a huge fan of the Coen brothers, so I really hope that the depiction of the First Nations people was an historically accurate comment, and an indictment of Cogburn's character. Have you seen "Reel Injun" - the award-winning documentary about the portrayal of Native Americans in cinema? It's an incredible movie and fascinating to watch in relation to "True Grit." I'd love to hear your thoughts at First Weekend Club's DVD Club blog here: http://bit.ly/eOtelDAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07597787640030322341noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5653374102321622345.post-39272061947806336922011-01-01T22:39:58.414-08:002011-01-01T22:39:58.414-08:00Hi there,

In fact, I laughed at both scenes which is what made me ask myself this - Would I still laugh if the scene was about Colonial British kicking Indians [think sub-contient, I am Indian] ?

If it was back in college when I was in India I would most probably have been offended for various reasons one of which is that Indians in India donot understand Western style humor sometimes, especially subtle and sarcastic ones. But now since I am older than back then [obviously] by a few years and I have lived in the US I think I would laugh.

Also , one important thing to consider is that those scenes were depicted with an element of humor, especially the first one. I don't know the objective for that ,maybe to try to show hard reality in a funny way .

We people in general sometimes laugh at situations where the society expects us to not laugh. It is not because we mean to offend anyone or not care for their feelings but simply because the situation might be manifest in a visually funny form or a funny sequence.

It's interesting that while I googled for 'native americans response to true grit' your blog came up but nothing from natives themselves. Neither of us are native-American is what I mean.

TC,
RHRebelhearthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07578951148875789824noreply@blogger.com
